How Houston’s Day For Night festival served as a sound intersection of curatorial excellence

Houston, Texas’ Day
For Night
festival has established itself as an
unconventional, hyper-sensory utopia. Bolstering an exemplary
menu of avant-garde talent, the festival satiates
thousands all while blurring the boundaries of performance
and offering the utmost in aural phenomena in its
industrial warehouse setting.

Day For Night prided itself on its snapshot booking in its
third year, by and for the experimentally-inclined. Enlisting
artists like Nina Kraviz,
Kaytranada,
Justice,
Jlin, Jamie xx, Mount Kimbie, Solange, REZZNine Inch
Nails
Tyler, the
Creator
, and Thom Yorke,
among others, the gathering has situated itself as an
unorthodox standout from an at times mundane, and largely
counterfeit American festival circuit.

This Berlin-based artist makes LEGO turntables and synthesizers

Australian graphic and web designer Arran Hearn was addicted to
building LEGOs in his early childhood, and so it was with this
passion in mind that he opened the doors at innovative
Berlin-based company called Numode. Hearn’s venture creates
custom LEGO kits in an effort to merge his passions for
hip-hop, active turntablism, and the venerable building blocks.

Numode creates miniature replicas of the classic Technics
SL1200 turntable and mixer, as well as the Roland TR-808,
TB-303, MPC-2000XL and Akai MPC.

And while Numode is not yet an official LEGO partner and is
designed by Hearn himself, we surely admire the attention to
detail. For each set comes completes with a color-printed
instruction booklet and custom-made, grooved discs that
certainly mimic the best look and feel of vinyl on
the most similar small-scale possible.

James Murphy played The Stooges in a techno club and ‘almost got murdered’

Before James Murphy pioneered the seminal
dance-punk band LCD Soundsystem, he was a DJ. Surely, with this
job comes the ability to read the room — at least that’s the
goal.

In a new episode of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich’s Beats 1 Radio show, Murphy discussed one
particular instance where this just simply wasn’t the case,
perhaps offering some insight into his eventual label and band
switch.

Looking back on the evening, he said, “I was DJ’ing what was
kinda like a techno house club, and I was really high. I was
dancing around, like, ‘Man, if someone would play ‘Loose’ by
the Stooges right now everyone would go crazy.”

“I got up and the first record that I put on at 3 o‘clock in
the morning in a place filled with people on drugs that are
there to hear techno was ‘Loose.’ And a guy was trying to climb
into the DJ booth to kill me, and I was like ‘No, just listen
to it, man. It’s amazing!’”

And while it’s likely James Murphy exaggerated his
proximity to death, it’s for certain he made the right choice
in not pursuing techno as a full-time gig.

A knockoff Fabric has been discovered in China

It has long been said that imitation is the most sincere
form of flattery, but in a country infamous for its copy
and paste pop culture, it seems things have been taken to an
entirely new level.

Just last week, Dutch DJ and promoter Bram van Ravenhorst — aka
Blind ’92 — who operates an underground club called Echo Bay in
Chongqing, China spotted a familiar sign in the country.
Unfortunately, Ravenhorst came to find that the city’s “FABRIC”
also boasts a logo nearly identical to the one used by the
iconic London institution of the same name. He captured the
image below.

Fabric-Shanghai-door

According to Mixmag Asia, it seems the nightclub’s
name and logo are the only similarities, as the Fabric knockoff boasts commercial EDM and house
music, as well as China’s “sexy girls dancing.”

Having opened in 1999, the storied London Fabric is one of the
most well-respected and well-known underground
music institutions in the world. Undoubtedly, the
global dance music community will have its opinions of
the counterfeit institution, but one thing’s for
sure, nothing will ever compare to the original.

deadmau5 stuns in BBC Radio 1 residency finale, confirms ‘new music, new tours, & a new show of some kind’ for 2018

“It’s a little weird…a little different…but we like
it…,”
deadmau5 coyly affirmed during his
final BBC Radio 1 show, and while the virtuoso
was referring to an eclectic tune by the likes of Holy U
& Mariatti, the same phrase would hold true for the
entirety of mau5’s show.

Over the last 12 months, deadmau5’s taken over the
airwaves of BBC, serving up an insatiable selection of utterly
divergent tunes. Sadly, all things must come to an end, and
Zimmerman’s show has reached its denouement. But in the
spirit of giving, deadmau5 left listeners with some parting
gifts.

Here’s what we know:

Not only did the producer confirm he will drop off a new
album next year, he’ll be continuing his airwave domination in
an exclusive capacity. And while the extent of it remains to be
known, it’s an impressive venture to gain excitement about
nonetheless.

Deadmau5 also left listeners with a new tune from the
deservedly rising Rinzen, whose ascension this year was
marked by a stunning cinematic EP. Zimmerman’s parting
words mentioned a year of new Mau5trap signees, a new We
Are Friends
compilation set to drop on December 8, new
tunes, a new tour, and new show.

Undeniably, 2018 will prove to be a fruitful year for the
artist and his label mates.

Frank Ocean hints he’s completed a new album

Frank Ocean is full of surprises, and it seems a
new album may be his latest.

At the conclusion of the artist’s exclusive Cyber Monday Endless
sale
, the aloof artist shared a cryptic message on his
Tumblr, a medium he’s long turned to for revealing information.
The message included that the now 30-year-old had, in fact,
finished another album before he turned 30.

fv74pg27wxutaawkwaic

“Well I️ made the album before 30,” it begins. “I JUST AINT PUT
THAT BITCH OUT!” He credited the phrase as “quotes from an
interview I haven’t given haha.” It seems his reference refers
to a 2012 tweet where he declared, “5 albums before 30.”

rgqtqbam2drfl4qjytvf

Ocean just recently surpassed 30, so if things go as planned it
seems the album may arrive sometime soon. But knowing Ocean,
and how long he’s sat on material in the past, who knows when
the new music will see the light of day. Surprises were
always kind of his forte anyways.

Diplo’s got a Kanye West story and it’s pretty epic

Diplo recently shared
his best Kanye West story in a new TBS
Storyville special. The clip offers a look into
West’s Watch The Throne sessions where Ye
and Jay-Z reportedly rented out the Mercer Hotel out
in New York.

“Because that’s what you do when you’re Kanye West,” the
producer proclaimed.

Despite knowing Ye for near 20 years, in the clip, Diplo
recalls one of his most memorable run-ins with the artist.
After getting a text from West to come down to the Mercer,
he sat Diplo down with another producer to co-produce a
song. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen stopped by, T-Pain dropped in, and Kim Kardashian — who Ye had
yet to marry at the time — also made an appearance.

And while Diplo didn’t make the final cut of the album, he did
witness something pretty spectacular before he left. “Kanye
came back, he opens the door… and he says, ‘Guys, I’m gonna
marry Kim Kardashian, I’m gonna be president one day, and I’m
gonna be a fashion designer.’” So far, two out of three have
come true. If things go as planned it seems Kanye may have a
predilection for telling the future…

Flume teases new music with Ta-ku in Road to Osaka short film

Since the release of his Grammy-award winning sophomore
album, Skinin early 2016, Flume has yet to touch the ground. Left with
little time to revel in his other-worldly success, the artist
took his beloved LP across the world with a series of
ambitious live shows and festival appearances.

Finally, the mastermind has had some time to create new bits and pieces.

Presently, Flume is gearing up for a performance in Osaka,
Japan and other locations throughout Asia. Leading up to
the event, he’s released an artistically-driven video shot
in Japan and even included some new music in it too. Much like
the montage, the track is especially cinematic. The
driving nature of the teaser also includes the work of fellow
producer Ta-Ku, who’s yet to have worked
collaboratively with the artist, despite his stellar remixes of
tracks like “Left Alone” and “Higher.”

Right now, it remains unknown whether fans will see an
official collaboration from the two in its entirety. But,
there’s no denying that new music teasers — each city will
receive its own video, presumably with new music clips for each
— are especially exciting, nonetheless.

Carl Cox expounds upon his MODEL 1 DJ set-up in new How I PLAY film

Richie Hawtin’s MODEL 1 has undoubtedly paved the
way today’s DJs work behind the decks.

In MODEL 1’s latest How I Play series, the
venerable Carl Cox expounds upon just how the setup
changed it all.

In near ten minutes, Cox explains his current DJ setup in
depth, offering up insight into his preferences of the MODEL 1,
his four-deck arsenal with a Traktor, and D2 controllers.

Cox also expounds upon his early years, “I was a clubber before
I was a DJ, so I know what it’s like…I’m able to transmit
exactly what I would want to hear on the dance floor. I almost
get jealous, because I would like to be on the dance floor when
I’m playing certain records, certain tracks, creating certain
moments”.

It’s with these years in mind, and his keen knack for
experimenting behind the decks, that he also details just how
the mixer makes his life easier, “I don’t know any other mixer
that has the ability to go this far in its scope of its
frequencies…working and sculpting sound on each channel.
There’s no boundaries,” he says.

Upon wrapping things up, Cox explains just how the mixer and
his set-up are more like a musical instrument than a DJ or
producer set-up. “It’s the spirit within that driving your
creativity, means that you’re playing with heart, spirit, and
soul…”

Joseph Capriati played a 25-hour set in Miami this weekend, his longest performance to date

Joseph Capriati‘s signature brand
of pearlescent and emotive techno, delivered with
exactitude and an equal amount of infectious flair, saw 25

out a massive set.

Capriati shared the information earlier this morning where he
said he came with the intention of playing a marathon set and
just couldn’t stop — extending the marathon for over 25

Capriati’s monumental set reigns supreme over fellow

While it’s certainly not a competition to see who can withstand
the longest set, Capriati’s accomplishment is an

Eric Prydz to release final version of the massive Pryda track ‘Stay With Me’ on November 20

Earlier this month, one of dance music’s champions, the

The Gaslamp Killer sues for defamation in aftermath of sexual assault allegations

In the aftermath of the published reports of
sexual assault allegations against film producer Harvey
Weinstein — now known as the “Weinstein effect” — accusations
arose that William Bensussen, best
known as The Gaslamp Killer, had drugged and raped two
women in 2013.

Chelsea Tadros shared a statement via Twitter that detailed her experience of meeting
Bensussen at a rooftop party in L.A. with her friend RaeAn
Medina. Tadros shared that the producer proceeded to drug
them, rape them, and then later returned them to the front of
the hotel. Bensussen went on to deny the allegations soon after.

Now, TMZ reports that Bensussen
is reportedly suing Tadros, Medina, and Tadros’ boyfriend for
$5 million in damages and for defamation.
Pitchfork has also obtained the complaint, which
reportedly details the allegations as “malicious and
fabricated” and refers to the sexual encounter as “consensual.”

Two alleged witnesses are reportedly cited in the document
—“Christopher S.” and “Peter R.” — who include that Bensussen
did not in fact “spike, tamper with, or put anything in the
drinks.” The two men also include that the women approached
Bensussen initially and that the women were, “under their own
power and did not appear incapacitated.”

While further details remain to unfold, in the meantime, The
Gaslamp Killer has been dropped from his longtime residency
with Low End Theory and had his forthcoming
Australian tour canceled.

deadmau5 to produce rising vocalist BoMason’s entire album

Dance music’s big cheese is a man of his word.

While it’s no secret that Joel Zimmerman is a candid,
unfiltered mastermind, earlier this year, deadmau5 happened upon aspiring vocalist
BoMason. Lo and behold, after gaining an immense appreciation
for his work, the legendary talent had reached out to
said aspiring producer in the hopes to help kickstart his
career. While the style and genre aren’t one would necessarily
expect from the dance music icon, deadmau5 was incredibly
supportive of Bo Mason’s palpable talent, even going
so far as to extend him the offer of a lifetime — that is,
if he could fulfill a simple challenge.

deadmau5

If Bo could attain one million plays — across all his
songs — he would fly him out to mau5trap and help him co-produce an album.

It’s important to know though that at the time of the
discovery, BoMason was near a mere 800 SoundCloud followers. His most-played track,
“Evolve,” sat at 134,000 plays. Now, at the time of writing,
it’s at 339,000.

Nearly a year later, BoMason has surpassed his one million mark
and deadmau5 is keeping good on his word. In a recent Twitter
conversation, the big cheese congratulated Bo on the
achievement and it seems the album will be coming after all.

While the news of the record’s forthcoming production
remains fresh and a release date is assumingly far off, with
mau5’s production proclivity in mind and his recent work with
Shotty Horroh considered, the new record
will be top notch.

Hakkasan Group raises over $1-million at magnificent Las Vegas victims benefit

In light of the tragic events that took place on October 1 at
the Route 91 Harvest Festival, the Las Vegas-based Hakkasan Group hosted a magnificent Benefit
Concert at OMNIA Nightclub inside Caesars Palace on
November 7. In an effort to raise money for those
affected, a multitude of EDM’s top tastemakers and the
local musical community gathered together.

Tiësto, Zedd, Kaskade, Steve Aoki, Party Favor, Cash Cash, NGHTMRE, and more played back-to-back sets in the
main room with additional performances from Lil
Jon
, and Celion Dion who even jumped on Steve Aoki’s decks for a go at
the Titanic soundtrack’s emotive “My Heart Will Go
On.”

As the night went on into the early hours of the morning, the
Hakkasan Group’s benefit proved to an expectedly remarkable
affair. The company raised over $1-million through donations,
ticket sales, and additional revenue throughout the night.
All proceeds from the event are to be donated to the Las
Vegas Victims Fund, via the Direct Impact Fund.

In addition to the event itself, Hakkasan also hosted
a private dinner at Searsucker inside Caesars Palace for a
number of the city’s first responders, as a means to
thank them for their service.

deadmau5 teases new track in ‘Red Rocks Aftermovie’

Deadmau5 is currently in the midst of the
second jaunt of his ‘lots of shows in a row tour.’

In honor of his two-day October stint at Colorado’s venerable
Red Rocks Amphitheater, deadmau5’s released an
aftermovie, showing off his custom-built Cube 2.1, and even
taking the time to tease some new music.

The aftermovie launches into deadmau5’s recent Shotty Horroh feature “Legendary,” but as the video nears its
halfway point, the scene shifts to mau5’s performance, wherein
a new track, “A Seed” is revealed.

Standing at a slight but mighty 50-second clip, deadmau5
plants the seed for what is likely a number off his new record.

If the big cheese keeps good by his word and avoids
any unforeseen roadblocks, it seems the record should blossom by Spring.

Recent study suggests rats are the ultimate party animal, crave cocaine after drinking alcohol

It seems rats like to have their cake and eat it too — or
rather — indulge with a side of cocaine when they imbibe
alcohol.

In a recent study carried out by Columbia University
Medical Center, researchers discovered that rats are the
ultimate party animal. When the rodents consumed alcohol every
day for 10 days and were also given cocaine, they, in
turn, developed a liking for the drug.

The rats that had been given the alcohol pressed a
lever 58 times to administer more cocaine. Whereas, the rats
that had been given no alcohol pressed it a mere 18 times.

In fact, the rodents became so keen to consume cocaine, that
when electric shocks were administered for pressing the
lever, they remained persistent to get a taste.

Of course, it’s unreasonable to draw the conclusion that rats
and humans behave in the same manner. Nonetheless, it’s clear
cocaine is a hell of a drug.

Pete Tong set to release ‘Ibiza Classics’ album

Pete Tong is set to debut his critically-acclaimed
Ibiza Classics show at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl this November. The indelible
occasion marks Tong’s US debut with The Heritage
Orchestra, overseen by director Chris Wheeler and
conductor Jules Buckley.

In celebration of the occasion, Tong has decided
that Ibiza Classics will be released as a
full-length album on December 1.

Ibiza Classics is set to follow up his 2016 No. 1
album Classic House, the UK’s bestselling debut record
in 2016, which has sold more than 270,000 copies to
date. On Ibiza Classics, Tong combines the
euphoria of touring his last work, alongside the decades
of immersion in dance music culture, and lessons from his
newfound peers Buckley and the Heritage Orchestra.

Ibiza Classics was recorded at producer Mark
Ralph’s studio in west London and programmer Dennis White’s
studio in Putney.

“They were like the Creative Control Centres of the thing,”
says Tong of the two.

“Last time it was performance first, record second, but this
time I started the project from a programming and arrangement
perspective with Mark and Dennis. Then we had the Heritage
Orchestra’s band going into the studio and playing on top of
what we did and adding in the live elements.” For the final
recording steps, Buckley arranged the tracks for the wider,
65-piece Heritage Orchestra, over just five days in London’s
Air Studios.

Considering Tong’s propensity on this record for the marrying
of dance music enthusiasm and its incessantly detail-oriented
recording process, the record’s shaping up to be one of his
most exhilarating works to date. “It feels appropriate to be
celebrating the legacy of dance music,” he says. “This is the
soundtrack to so many people’s lives.”

Tracklist:
1. Clubbed To Death
2. Galvanize feat. Reggie Snow
3. Body Language feat. Raye
4. Killer feat. Seal
5. Sing It Back feat. Becky Hill
6. You Don’t Know Me feat. Craig David
7. Medley: Running / Finally feat. Jessie Ware
8. Unfinished Sympathy feat. Samm Henshaw
9. Medley: Rej / The Man With The Red Face / Yeke Yeke
10. La Ritournelle feat. Will Heard
11. Promised Land feat. Disciples
12. Grey
13. Out Of Space feat. Assassin
14. One
15. You Got The Love feat. Candi Staton

Ibiza Classics is officially out December 1 and

Frank Ocean unveils 32-page visual essay and personal letter about peace, love, & the power of yes

Throughout the entirety of his career, Frank Ocean has solidified his standing as one of
the great creatives of the twenty-first century.  A
recluse in his demeanor, the artist’s driven home increasingly
compelling conversations in R&B and pop music alike,
centered around creativity, sexuality, and the importance of
identity through his few artistic deliverances.

Now, relatively fresh off touring Europe and the US with his
intimate shows in support of Blonde,
Ocean unveils a new visual document. Much like
his 2017 counterpart to Blonde,
a magazine entitled Boys Don’t Cry,
Ocean shares an exclusive 32-page photo essay
in Vice’s i-D. The pages echo the importance
of the artist’s support-system and give thanks to those who
aided in his realization and attainment of his creative dreams.

“You can answer a lot of questions with ‘Yes.’ But you can
answer many more with ‘No.’ No is run of the mill. Yes is a
gem. Whenever I feel alone I watch live television, something
about it being okay on their end makes it okay on mine.
Onstage one in-ear is my mic feed and the other one is a Tim
Ferriss podcast. I go long periods without talking but I
raise my voice when the people on the phone are in loud
places. I’ve never given my fans nicknames because the ones I
think of are embarrassing. I’m world famous. I had peace in
my twenties. Big Pharrell praying hands those weren’t
mutually exclusive. If you want to make your 30s sound
appealing just mention ‘sexual prime.’ Re: the photos… as
Karl Lagerfeld would say they ‘came to me in a dream.’ Summer
two thousand and seventeen. We leaned into it. Bananaberry

thousand and seventeen then you’ll love two thousand and
eighteen.” – Frank Ocean
