Spotify Announces Remixers Will Now Receive More Credit for Their Remixes

Up until now, the rules of how remixers receive credit for
their remixes on Spotify have been murky.
Spotify partially addressed the issue by listing remixes under
the Popular and Latest
sections of an artist’s profile last October.
Now, Spotify has announced a huge shift in how remixers receive
credit for their remix: counting plays toward their monthly

Previously, streams of a remix would not count toward a
remixer’s monthly listeners number. But under the new move, any
remixer will earn toward their monthly listener number with
their remix streams. This is huge news for artists who release
remixes that match or even surpass an original track’s
popularity. The update counts toward all remixes uploaded since
the beginning of 2015 and will include all remixes moving
forward. Additionally, artists can now view their remix metrics
using Spotify for Artists. Spotify
announced the news with an interview with Louie
, one of electronic music’s most prolific artists
and remixers.

Dekmantel reveals Modeselektor, Mariel Ito, Ricardo Villalbos for 2018

Amsterdam’s famed Dekmantel Festival has finally released its

The piece floats through digital landscapes as a drawling voice
recites names like Carl Craig, Ricardo Villalobos, Four Tet,
Helena Hauff, Jamie XX, Objekt, Modeselektor and more as an
official line-up announcement.

Standout, special performances will come from A.R.E., the
collaborative project of Hieroglyphic Being, Sarathy Korwar and
Shabaka Hutchings, LSD, the grouping of Function, Luke Slater
and Steve Bicknell and the highly-anticipated return of Maceo

Also on the bill is Carl Craig presenting his Versus

Metalheadz Classics showcase.

The festival will take place on August 1 through 5.

Gary Richards announces his new festival cruise, Friend Ship

After hinting at new events to come in his exclusive interview on On Rotation, Gary
Richards has announced a brand new festival cruise he’s
cheekily christened Friend Ship.

During his show this past weekend at Brooklyn’s Output,
Richards announced to his crowd that plans had already begun
for the new musical festival at sea.

In his On Rotation interview, he mentioned that fans of his
should go check out a vague website called ‘AMFAMFAMF‘, which
the site reveals is an abbreviation for a music festival called
All My Friends, and sign up for updates. It’s unknown if AMF is
yet another separate festival, or the same as ‘Friend Ship’.

As the founder of Holy Ship, which was left under the HARD Events umbrella after
his departure from Live Nation for a new position at LiveStyle,
it’s no surprise that Gary will be rebuilding his new brand
starting with what he knows with a new version of a
electronic-tipped music festival aboard a cruise.

One of Melbourne’s most iconic venues is facing demolition

Melbourne’s iconic Festival Hall is facing demolition after its
owners lodged an application for two 16-storey apartment towers
to be built on the site.

The West Melbourne venue first opened in 1915 for events
including boxing and is still owned by the same family. They
say the 5400-capacity space can no longer compete with larger
and more modern rivals, including Margaret Court Arena.

It’s the only remaining Australian venue where The Beatles
played and has hosted The Chemical Brothers, Radiohead and
Justice in more recent times, with Kaytranada already this
year, Tiesto in February and Carl Cox’s Pure in April.

The $65 million development plan would involve much of the
original hall being demolished and replaced by apartments,
offices and retail spaces, but historically significant parts
would remain, including the boxing ring and Dudley St

Owner Stadiums Limited does not intend to develop the site
itself, but hopes to find an interested buyer to realise the

A Story Like Mine: Halsey Delivers Powerful Speech About Sexual Violence

Halsey certainly has a way with words — that
can be heard clearly with any of her smash hits, but even more
so in her raw, real life #MeToo account.

The singer took the stage at the Women’s
in New York City over the weekend with a
different tone than usual. Her fierce, enticing delivery was
still intact but there was a vulnerability in her voice.
Instead of belting out “Closer” or “New Americana” or “Bad
At Love,” Halsey stood before the world to deliver a poem about
her past experiences with sexual violence.

“It’s 2009 and I’m 14 and I’m crying,” she starts. “Not
really sure where I am but I’m holding the hand of my best
friend Sam, in the waiting room of a Planned Parenthood.”

Halsey’s speech is one of the most heartbreaking yet empowering
things we’ve heard. It’s difficult to hear, but it’s the harsh
reality of what many young women suffer through as victims of
sexual assault.

“And the stairwell beside apartment 1245 will haunt me in my
sleep for as long as I am alive,” she continues. “And I’m too
young to know why it aches in my thighs, but I must lie, I must

That vulnerability, that fear to speak out, gets shut down
completely by then end as Halsey proclaims: “For the
people who had to grow up way too young, there is work to be
done, there are songs to be sung.”

“Lord knows there’s a war to be won.”

Watch Halsey deliver her heart-wrenching poem entitled “A
Story Like Mine” below…

Electronic music hub Rainbow Venues has launched a fundraising

need to acknowledge the huge significance The Rainbow Venues
have, to millions of visitors to Birmingham, and what impact it

MDMA On The Verge Of Being Legal Psychotherapy Treatment In US and Canada

MDMA is coming closer to becoming a revolutionary treatment
for PTSD and other stress related conditions…

Researchers across North America are gearing up for the third
and final stage of trials, in hopes
to legalize psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. If things
go well, psychotherapy and trauma treatment through MDMA
could be legal in Canada and the United States by 2021.

Thus far, the experimental trials have been successful. The
U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the same organization that
regulates pharmaceutical drugs, has even gone as far to
call it a “breakthrough therapy” for PTSD treatment.

“We hope to prove that MDMA-assisted psychotherapy is the most
effective treatment for PTSD that exists on the
planet,” said Mark Haden, public
health professor at the University of British Columbia and
advocate for the treatment.

Vancouver is leading the way with its third phase of
experimental trials, which will involve 150 study
participants and aim to prove the findings of the second stage
trials on a larger scale. Soon, the hope is that MDMA will be
viewed as more than just a “party drug” but a vital treatment
for PTSD and beyond.

New Study Reveals Music Therapy May Benefit Individuals With Dementia

According to a new report commissioned jointly by the
International Longevity Centre think-tank and the Utley
Foundation, the symptoms of hundreds of thousands sufferers of
dementia could potentially be alleviated via a kind of a
therapy most of us inadvertently use everyday – music therapy.
The study revealed that music can help people with dementia
“recall information and reduce symptoms such as anxiety,
agitation and aggression.”

Through a combination of existing evidence and expert
interviews, researchers were able to determine that  music
may also “help to delay the onset of dementia and improve brain
function and information recall.” The commission has now called
for music therapy to be introduced and integrated with more
priority in the UK where the study revealed that only 5% of
care homes were using the therapy effectively.

Dr Laura Phipps, of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “NHS
guidelines suggest music therapy as a possible way to help
people with dementia deal with complex behavioural symptoms. As
more studies start to explore the benefits of music in
dementia, this report highlights the importance of developing
robust and practical approaches to explore the benefits and
cost-effectiveness of music interventions, which are often
delivered in very diverse and tailored ways.

“It is vital to explore all avenues to improve the lives of
people with dementia, as well as ensuring that they can benefit
from such developments, and research has an important role to
play here.”

In 1999 he half-finished a mixtape called ‘Falling on Your Arse

We’ve seen music stars become actors in the past, and the
results are often lacking; think Madonna’s struggles in
Evita or Pete Doherty bumbling through
Confession of a Child of the Century.

Although Hardy never made it in the music biz before getting
his acting break, the mixtape is actually pretty good. His
famously striking voice can maintain an impressive flow, even
with some strays to dodgy cockney accent territory. Perhaps Guy
Ritchie heard this before casting him in RocknRolla?
Tracy’s beats, meanwhile. are defined by breezy strings,
analogue crackling and jazzy percussion.

Calvin Harris Announces He is Moving on from His Funk Wav Sound

When Calvin Harris unveiled “Slide” with
Frank Ocean and Migos

also introduced an entire new sound. Once known for his
progressive and pop EDM sound, Calvin Harris switched over to a
more R&B, funk and hip-hop sonic palette. He dubbed this

Harris is putting that style to bed…for now.

Harris tweeted that he was officially moving on from the Funk

it looks like that remix will be the last of Harris’ foray into

house or techno? We’ll have to wait and see, but based off his
experiment with Funk Wav, what he pursues next will be

Police found 745 kilos of cocaine stashed inside fresh pineapples

Portuguese and Spanish authorities have seized 745 kilograms of
cocaine that a Colombian drug ring was attempting to smuggle
inside pineapples.

In order to disguise the drugs as fruit, the smugglers packaged
the cocaine in yellow wax that was then covered in hollowed out
pineapple skins.

According to BBC News, the recent sting was part of an
ongoing investigation between Portugal and Spain.

Nine members of the drug ring were arrested in the bust while
authorities also dismantled a lab and seized €400,000.

Portuguese investigators released a statement stating that the
Iberian Peninsula is a major route for drug smugglers: “This
organised international group had repeatedly brought large
quantities of cocaine to the European continent.”

This wasn’t the first time police found drugs inside fruit.
Last year over 12,000 kilos of cocaine were found inside a shipment of bananas in
Holland and Belgium.

Festival contractor caught by police with 260 grams of cocaine, other drugs

A huge amount of drugs, including 260 grams of cocaine, has

Rainbow Serpent Festival
, which kicks off next Thursday
(January 25).

Police arrested the men at a Ballarat petrol station, about
half an hour from the festival site at Lexton, Victoria, on
Wednesday (January 18) after allegedly finding drugs, cash,
electronic scales and zip lock bags in their Toyota ute.

The Courier reports police allegedly
seized 260 grams of cocaine, 86 times the trafficable quantity,
valued about $85,000 AUD, 84 grams of cannabis, 15 grams of
MDMA, 25 grams of amphetamine and amphetamine paste, one litre
of GHB and four grams of hashish.

Cash totaling $12,453 AUD as well as $6200 in US dollars was
also allegedly seized from the ute, the paper reports.

One of the men told police he was contracted to work at next

Rainbow Serpent organisers said in a statement: “the Rainbow
team works incredibly hard to keep our patrons safe and to have

and extremely disappointed. We unreservedly condemn these
actions and appreciate the work of Victoria Police for
preventing those drugs from arriving on site.”

Tim Cook: Next iOS Update Will Allow Users to Disable Intentional Battery Slowdowns

The end of 2017 saw Apple embroiled in
controversy regarding its private decision to slow down the performance of
iPhones with older batteries
in order to avoid intermittent
shut downs, a decision they made without consulting any users.

Following a litany of lawsuits and public outrage, Apple
CEO Tim Cook today shared that the next update
to iOS 11 will allow users to disable battery performance
throttling on their device. The update will arrive first in a
developer beta early February, followed by a wider public
rollout likely in March.

“We’re going to give people the visibility of the health of
their battery so it’s very, very transparent,” he says. “This
hasn’t been done before.”
