Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey Lose Their Heads Over Love on ‘The Middle’: Listen

If we’re placing bets on country’s next huge pop crossover
star, we’re putting chips on “My Church” singer songwriter
Maren Morris. She just laid
down a powerful pop performance on Zedd‘s latest “The Middle,” featuring a
production assist from one of his best buddies Grey.

“I’m so excited we’re finally able to share ‘The Middle’ with
the world,” Maren is quoted in a press
release. “Zedd was so great to work with and so easy
going, it felt like we’d been working together for years. The
sound is reflective of my many influences as an artist — a
little bit country, little pop, little R&B, relatable,
emotional and catchy as hell. There are no limits with this
song and I can’t wait to see how the fans react.”

“The Middle” is relatively sparse with
cute, lively flourishes and a backbone beat crafted
from what sounds like a car’s turn-light blinkers and
ticking clocks (but a lot cooler than that). It’s almost as if
Morris, fed up with a lover stuck in their tracks, literally
pulls her car over and demands to be met halfway. It’s got
definite sonic similarities to Zedd’s previous hit “Stay”
with Alessia Cara, and that
song climbed to no. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, so it stands to
reason that “The Middle” has pretty good odds.

“We worked really hard on this record to get it just right and
it feels great to be able to finally share it with everyone,”
Zedd said in a statement. “It was super fun working
with Maren, because she is clearly an amazing singer and very
talented musician, and, I always love working with Grey,
because we push ourselves to make the best music possible and
the end result is incredible.”

Zedd and Grey have teamed up loads of times, from the
Hailee Steinfeld jam
“Starving” to the high-octane dance tune “Adrenaline.” “We
love working with Zedd, who’s not only been a great
mentor, but a great friend,” Grey says. “It’s always
exciting to see what we can come up with in the studio together
and even more exciting to be able to share this with

There’s a lyric video for “The Middle” out today, so you can
get down to the hard work of memorizing each line by heart.
Keep your eyes peeled during the Grammys Sunday, Jan. 28,
to see a special presentation of the song’s official video,
directed by Dave Meyers, as it appears in promotion of
superstore behemoth Target which has adopted “The Middle”
for its next campaign.
